Currency formatting guide

Formatting is more than adding a symbol.

A professional currency formatter must handle grouping conventions, decimal rules, negative values, accounting notation, currency-specific precision and locale differences. Indian English uses lakh and crore grouping, while many international locales use groups of three digits.

Indian grouping

In the Indian numbering system, 12345678 becomes 1,23,45,678. In standard international grouping, the same number becomes 12,345,678.

Accounting notation

Accounting output commonly places negative values in parentheses rather than using a leading minus sign.

Currency-specific decimals

Some currencies are commonly shown with two decimals, while currencies such as Japanese yen are usually shown without fractional digits. This tool lets you override those defaults when your use case requires it.
